Know Your Body to Get Yourself Slim

Humans are naturally fascinated, and even obsessed, by their bodies. One of the main concerns tends to be the weight of our body and its seemingly never ending fluctuations. Many people spend their whole lives struggling with their weight, yo-yo dieting and even considering surgery as a solution. But people come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes and before you even think about any form of weight loss, you should get to know your body.

Firstly, you should find out what your average weight should be in relation to your size, age and sex. For example, a 45 year old, 1m70cm man will not have the same average weight as a 1m50cm, 14 year old girl! A simple way to work out what your average weight should be is to take your height (say 1m57cm) and subtract 10 from the number of centimetres (so 57-10=47). This gives you the average weight you should be (47kg in this example). Although not the most scientifically accurate of techniques, I have found it works well as a general guide. If you do want a more scientific approach, then find out what your BIM should be and what it actually is.

The second thing you should do is know what feels right. Some people go on all inclusive holidays and just eat during the holiday with out exercising so much. Knowing your body means knowing when it needs to exercise or cut down on the snacks and eat more fruit and veg. If your body feels uncomfortable, you will feel uncomfortable and that’s probably when you will think you should go on a diet (whilst eating the last Malteser).

The whole idea of dieting and weight loss is flawed. I’m sorry to have to break it to you, but there it is! Our bodies need to eat and drink to produce energy (and ultimately stay alive!). Making our bodies ‘diet’ and limit the normal intake of food and drink they should have just makes them panic. True, when you live on a piece of cheese and 2 carrots a day, your body will lose weight by using up its fat reserves. But there are 3 problems with this: A) if you continue on this diet you will be very weak and grumpy B) eventually your body will have no fat reserves left so it will have to resort to eating up your muscles to use them as energy and then you will become skin and bones (and that’s what we call anorexia kids!) and C) even if you do decide that carrots and cheese is really not a good idea and stop dieting, you will then probably overeat and your body will put more weight on than you started with as it panics you won’t feed it again for a long time (that’s what happens if you traumatise your body with dieting! It doesn’t trust you anymore!)

So what to do if weight loss through dieting is not an option? Well, your weight should be thought of as something that needs managing, not losing. You’re always going to have weight and be heavy! That means you’re alive! But that weight should be relevant to your body so that you’re not putting your life at risk. Too much of it and you could suffer all sorts of health complications, and same goes for too little . But how can you manage this balance?

The answer is simple and has been said many times before: exercise regularly, eat healthily and have a little bit of everything in moderation. Here’s an example of healthy tips and tricks which you can integrate to your daily routine to get yourself slim!
